Demolition of the tea house foundation and temporary stabilization of the embankment (phase 1), Manoir Papineau National Historic Site

The Tea House is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building and an integral part of the Manoir Papineau National Historic Site. Following a windstorm in May 2022, the tea pavilion sustained significant damage to its wooden structure and retaining wall. After noting the damage and the associated costs to either rebuild or dismantle the pavilion, Parks Canada had to make the decision to dismantle the wooden structure of the tea pavilion and temporarily secure the masonry structures to ensure the safety of users of the Fairmont Hotel trail, located directly below the slope of the pavilion. In October 2024, Parks Canada plans to dismantle the pavilion foundation and temporarily stabilize the embankment and slope to secure the site and allow the trail to open safely. Future work will include permanent stabilization of the slope, reconstruction of the retaining wall and alternative enhancement of the tea pavilion.
