Brass Point Bridge Rehabilitation

The Brass Point swing and fixed bridges are located on Burnt Hills Road near Seeley's Bay, Ontario, and crosses a segment of the Rideau Canal National Historic Site. These bridges provide an important link between the City of Kingston and the Township of South Frontenac. The bridges are currently in poor condition and have already been downrated from 15 tonnes to 10 tonnes.

This project entails the comprehensive reconstruction of both bridges, which are contiguous. The swing bridge will undergo a complete replacement of its timber superstructure and mechanical/electrical components, and a reconstruction of the pivot pier and west abutment. Concurrently, the fixed bridge will undergo in situ repairs including sandblasting and re-coating of its metal superstructure, and replacement of timber stringers and deck. Associated roadwork will include a raise of elevation on both sides of the bridges, and construction of a road shoulder. Staging areas are expected to be located on the existing roadway and may require the removal of a limited amount of vegetation. The project will involve substantial work above and adjacent to water, but in-water work is limited to a small coffer dam to isolate the area by the swing bridge's pivot pier.

Construction for this project is expected to take two years. Mobilization is scheduled for fall 2025, and demobilization is anticipated by late fall 2027. Site restoration is planned for completion in spring 2028. While the crossing will be closed to vehicular traffic during this time, it will remain open for navigation.
