Jacques Cartier Bridge, Sections 4, 5 and 6. Steel rehabilitation and reinforcement, paint touch-ups, and other related work

Project: JCP0045

The Jacques Cartier Bridge, inaugurated in 1930, is an iconic five-lane structure linking the island of Montréal to the south shore of the St. Lawrence River at the City of Longueuil. This major infrastructure is considered both a road traffic corridor and a key active transportation route for the Greater Montréal area.

The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) intends to extend the service life of the Jacques Cartier Bridge beyond its 150th year and will be carrying out major workon Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the bridge. The work primarily includes the following:

  • Seismic upgrading: reinforcement of certain steel structure elements to improve its response to a seismic event.
  • Bridge bearings: replacement of bridge bearings and access ramps on Île Sainte-Hélène.
  • Steel structures: repair and reinforcement of steel elements.
  • Paint coating: repair of the paint coating on the steel structure in areas affected by corrosion.
  • Related ad hoc work: replacement of deck expansion joint gaskets and repair of outer sides of slabs on the ramps.

Work will start in 2026 and extend over a period of approximately five years.

The completion of the work will require short-term partial closures.

The project also includes a series of environmental protection measures, notably the protection of St. Lawrence River waterways from lead-based paint residues, as well as the protection of protected species such as the peregrine falcon and the cliff swallow.

This maintenance and rehabilitation project is part of JCCBI's mission to ensure user mobility, safety, and longevity of the infrastructure by promoting a systemic management approach grounded in sustainable development.
