Geotechnical Investigations for a Radioisotope Research and Development Facility

Geotechnical investigations are proposed to support the site selection process for a radio-isotope research and development facility at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL), Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site.  The proposed facility will have a footprint of approximately 4500 m2.  Three locations are being considered for the facility, all of which are located on heavily disturbed land. The geotechnical characterization will involve drilling a series of boreholes to evaluate soil and bedrock quality. No vegetation will be removed in order to carry out the work and as result, there are no expected impacts to the individual, the residences or critical habitat of wildlife. 

 The geotechnical investigations are in support of selecting the appropriate site for a proposed radio-isotope research and development facility. Once a suitable location has been determined, an assessment of environmental effects under the IAA will be conducted for the proposed facility.  The proposed geotechnical work is scheduled to occur in fall 2021.  All activities will be conducted in accordance with the environmental policy that directs the management and operation of AECL's sites and all applicable legislation.
