Creation of a new canoe-camping site at La Pêche Lake in Gatineau

Canoe-camping site 11, located at La Pêche Lake, is outdated and does not provide an ideal experience for campers. The vegetation cover and ground have been damaged by trampling and erosion. In addition, the presence of Eurasian watermilfoil compromises access for maintenance purposes.

The National Capital Commission, is looking to close and rehabilitate canoe-camping site 11, and replace it with a new site. The new site will be built on a rocky point. This location is considered less sensitive than the current location in the bay and mostly made up of trees, with little vegetation on the ground. Federal land use, design and transaction approval under the National Capital Act will be required.

The new canoe-camping site will include, the installation of a wooden shelter, four raised wooden platforms, a dry toilet and a floating dock.

There is no presence of critical habitat of a species at risk in the sector, and no species at risk has been listed in the immediate area of ??the work. There is a presence of Eurasian watermilfoil in this sector of the Lake as well. Remains of old facilities are also present on the site. For this reason, an archaeological investigation will take place to determine their potential as well as mitigation measures to protect these potential resources.

The project will start during fall 2022, after the migratory bird nesting season to avoid potential environmental effects unless decided otherwise. The work includes manual excavations for the installation of a dry toilet and the development of paths to avoid trampling. No work will take place in the root zone of trees considered species at risk. The final locations will be determined in a manner that avoids protected or endangered species and the cutting of trees that have a diameter, at breast height, of 10 cm or more. However, several dangerous trees will need to be removed for safety reasons.

The floating dock will be designed and installed to avoid creating potential impacts to fish and fish habitat. A fixation of the dock directly on the surface bedrock located in the shoreline via anchors is currently planned. Furthermore, the use of concrete blocks to anchor the floating dock is also being evaluated.
