Final harvesting of the red pine plantation

The Proposed Project

Commercial Development – Ottawa International Airport (YOW)

Under its Ground Lease with the Minister of Transport, the OIAA is responsible for managing the land leased from Transport Canada and undertaking development of such lands in a manner compatible with air transportation activities. The land in question contains a red pine plantation that was planted for harvesting purposes. Harvesting of the remainder of the plantation, as was done for previous commercial land lease opportunities along Hunt Club Road, will allow further commercial development in full accordance with municipal zoning and; will be undertaken following environmental best practices. Furthermore it has come to the attention of the OIAA through a recent assessment prepared by an arborist that the height, stunted diameter growth and interdependency of the tree crowns of the remaining trees have rendered them prone to failure under wind, heavy snow and ice loads. The intent is therefore to proceed to a final harvest reducing a potential liability of the OIAA.
