Rehabilitation of the Gatineau Parkway between Alexandre-Taché Boulevard and the former Gamelin Street, Gatineau

Beginning at the southern end of Gatineau Park, the Gatineau Parkway provides direct access to some of the park's most popular attractions, trails and viewpoints. Unlike the rest of the parkway network, a 2.7-km section of the Gatineau parkway, located between Alexandre-Taché Boulevard and the former Gamelin Street, remains open all year. This section is an important access route to Gatineau Park, and for the National Capital Commission's (NCC) shuttle service to Gatineau Park.

Due to the very poor condition of the road surface along this section of the parkway, major rehabilitation is required to ensure continued access of the parkway for its users and the Gatineau Park shuttle service. In addition, there are drainage issues along the parkway. The NCC therefore proposes to complete a partial reconstruction of the road structure to replace non-functional culverts, eliminate drainage issues by installing new concrete curbs, catch basins and drains, repair guardrails installed at the approaches to the Allumetières viaduct, and improve existing road signage along the parkway. Construction is planned to begin in June 2025.

A characterization of the natural environment in the work and access zones has been carried out, including an inventory of trees that will be impacted by the proposed works. Mitigation measures such as erosion and sediment control, tree protection measures and tree compensation, will be implemented to protect wildlife and their habitat near the work zone.

The project is proposed by the NCC, on land under its stewardship (Gatineau Park) as well as on land that is owned by Hydro Québec and Quebec's Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable. The project is subject to a federal land use, design and transaction approval (FLUDTA) under the National Capital Act. Coordination with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is required, as DFO will likely issue a letter of advice under the Fisheries Act for planned work in fish habitat.
