Installation of new distance measuring equipment (DME) in Trois-Rivières

As part of larger strategic project, NAV CANADA will implement twenty-seven new Distance measuring Equipment (DME) across all FIRs. Used in conjunction with other DMEs already in service, the new DMEs will further establish the DME-DME Inertial (DDI) network. This Area Navigation (RNAV) service will allow NAV CANADA to publish arrival and departure procedures per the RNAV1 ICAO standard at nineteen airports as well as provide support for enroute navigation.

As part of this larger project, Trois-Rivières was selected to receive the DME upgrade at the existing Trois-Rivières Peripheral Air-ground Link (PAL) air navigation aid site.

Site location

The PAL/DME site is located 1.15 km northeast of the Trois-Rivières Airport off of Saint-Jean Boulevard. The PAL/DME property area is approximately 0.3716 hectares which includes a cleared plot of land, 2 existing communication towers and a small equipment shelter. The geographical location is 46°22'10"N 72°39'52"W

Description of buildings and Construction Activities

Currently, the site is comprised of three structures. A communication tower and shelter located toward the center of the property and another communication tower in the south corner of the property. The site is accessed by a gravel road in the northern corner of the lot. The site is accessed from Saint-Jean Boulevard. The ground cover is mostly grass covered apart from the gravel access road and pad around the shelter. The grass is regularly maintained to ensure the vegetation does not interfere with signals from the communication towers.

As part of this project, the existing shelter in the center of the property is going to be removed. A new 11'x32' slab-on-grade foundation will be built in the southern corner of the lot, adjacent to the existing tower in that location. A 11'x30' fiberglass shelter will be placed on the foundation and will house the equipment of the new DME. A new gravel access road will be built along the eastern side of the property, extending down from Saint-Jean Boulevard to the southern corner. A service trench for a conduit, approximately 0.7m deep and 36m long, will be installed between the center tower and the new shelter. The soil will be used to refill the trench after the lines are installed and the exposed disturbed soil will be reseeded as necessary. The new shelter will be connected to the tower in the southern corner by a shot cable bridge with concrete piers.

Finally, the current existing shelter will be removed from the site.
