Relocation of the portage trail between Wapizagonke Lake Basins 3 and 4

The portage trail between basins 3 and 4 of Lake Wapizagonke also serves as an emergency and operations trail for the various services of La Mauricie National Park. It provides access to the Waber Falls area, a popular site for visitors. The site needs to be relocated due to outdated infrastructure, frequent flash flood threats, and its location in low-lying wetlands that complicates its maintenance and use. The location of the new path is projected on a plateau located on the other side of the watercourse separating the two basins. Its course does not cross any wetlands or water areas and is located for the most part in a sparse maple-yellow birch forest where little tree felling will be necessary. The trailhead takes place on the disturbed site of a former hunting camp. At first glance, this project has several advantages. Ecological gains are envisaged by the removal of infrastructure from wetlands and bodies of water. Economic gains are also expected from minimizing the amount of infrastructure, which will ensure the sustainability of visitor safety at the same time. It is also a great opportunity to adapt our infrastructure to the climate changes observed in the Park in recent years and to ensure its sustainability.
