Rideau River Eastern Pathway "Stanley Avenue Missing Link" - Proposed Multi-use Pathway

Project summary, including how the NCC is involved :

The City of Ottawa is proposing to close the pre-existing gap in the multi-use pathway between the south limit of Stanley Avenue and the north side of the New Edinburgh Park playground (where the pathway transitions to/from mixed traffic) with the addition of a new segment of multi-use pathway.

The proposed design considers land ownership and land use, the existing corridor esthetics, safety and affordability in providing an enhanced user experience. The proposed design is also considerate of potential impacts to trees and greenspace, which have been mitigated as much as possible.

The NCC has approval over this project as some of the new segment of multi-use pathway is on federal land.

Purpose of project:

The City of Ottawa is proposing to close the pre-existing gap in the Rideau River Eastern Pathway in New Edinburgh with the addition of a new segment of multi-use pathway between the south limit of Stanley Avenue and the north side of the New Edinburgh Park playground. The goal of the project is to create a safer and more comfortable connection for people walking or riding along the Rideau River Eastern Pathway.

The continuity of this pathway is identified in the Council-approved 2013 Ottawa Cycling Plan as part of the Ultimate Network Concept (UNC), for which there is no targeted completion date. Part of the purpose of the UNC is to encourage co-ordination with neighbouring construction and to facilitate efficiencies when possible. The reinstatement of a portion of New Edinburgh Park/Stanley Park following the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project construction presents an opportunity to do just that.

Expected start and completion date:

Summer 2020 – Fall 2020 (TBC). The construction timeline is intended to coincide with the CSST project reinstatement work but remains subject to necessary approvals.

Location of project:

The proposed new segment of multi-use pathway runs generally parallel to Stanley Avenue, between the south limit of Stanley Avenue and the north side of the New Edinburgh Park playground (ie: connecting the Rideau River Eastern Pathway), approximately 6 - 10 m south of the road edge.

The City of Ottawa will be providing information and seeking feedback on the proposed design through an online engagement from May 21, 2020 to June 11, 2020.
