Jacques Cartier Bridge, Section 7. Rehabilitation work on Piers 23 and 26 and securing tie rods

Project: JCP0050

The Jacques Cartier Bridge, inaugurated in 1930, is an iconic five-lane structure linking the island of Montréal to the south shore of the St. Lawrence River at the City of Longueuil. This major infrastructure is considered both a road traffic corridor and a key active transportation route for the Greater Montréal area.

The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (PJCCI) will be carrying out major rehabilitation work on Piers 23 and 26 of the Jacques Cartier Bridge. This work will extend the service life of the bridge beyond its 150th year.

The work primarily includes the following:

  • Rehabilitation and seismic reinforcement of Piers 23 and 26.
  • Increased structural reliability of the tie-rod system.
  • Improved access to anchor wells for inspection purposes.
  • Repairs to the outer sides of the central deck in Section 7.

Repair work on the piers will be carried out in keeping with their original architecture, without affecting their aesthetic or symbolic value.

Work will begin in 2026 and continue for four years.

The project will be carried out in two urban areas, each with its own specific characteristics. First, work on Pier 26 will require partial closures near the intersection of De Lorimier and Notre-Dame streets. To achieve this, interventions will be coordinated with the City of Montréal and the Ministère des transports et de la Mobilité durable. In addition, due to the proximity of Pier 23 to the shore of the St. Lawrence River, environmental protection measures will be implemented, including the protection of waterways from potential suspended materials, the protection of fish habitat, and the protection of other protected species such as the peregrine falcon and the cliff swallow.

This maintenance and rehabilitation project is part of JCCBI's mission to ensure user mobility, safety, and longevity of the infrastructure by promoting a systemic management approach grounded in sustainable development
