Strutt House Rehabilitation at 1220 Chemin de la Montagne, Gatineau, QC

Built in 1956, the Strutt House is a Recognized Federal Heritage building in Gatineau Park. It is a striking example of mid-20th century modern architecture. It features a split-level layout, and an irregular plan adapted to the hillside terrain. The National Capital Commission (NCC) acquired the Strutt House in 2010 as part of its mandate to conserve National Interest Land Mass within Gatineau Park.

The Strutt house was leased for several years to the Strutt Foundation, who hosted tours and heritage architecture workshops. The house has been vacant since 2019. In 2021, the NCC publicly launched its Creative Placemaking / Capital Culture Lives Here initiative, and the Strutt House was formally selected for the initiative's next round of placements.

The goal of this rehabilitation project is to return the Strutt house to a functional residential standard, while honoring its unique architecture. To achieve this, the NCC proposes to rehabilitate the building's envelope and ensure the home is suitable for four-season use. This will include replacement of windows to incorporate bird collision mitigations; and upgrading the roof, utilities, interior finishes, some structural elements, and site access.

The proposed project would take place on lands owned by the NCC, and will be subject to a federal land use, design, and real estate transaction approval under the National Capital Act. The NCC will make an environmental determination under the Impact Assessment Act.

Select pruning and tree removals may be conducted to enable the proposed project activities. The construction area will be accessed with light duty machines. Construction is anticipated to occur during the spring, summer, and fall of 2025.
