Demolition of Silo and Garage – 3160 Ramsayville Road, Ottawa

The National Capital Commission (NCC) proposes to demolish two deteriorated agricultural structures located at 3160 Ramsayville Road in Ottawa, Ontario, within the Greenbelt. The site is a historic farmstead visible from Ramsayville Road, Russell Road and Highway 417 and contains several assets, including a farmhouse and barn that will remain. The proposed works involve the demolition of a concrete panel silo and a timber-frame shed/garage.

The project is proposed on federal lands owned and managed by the NCC and is subject to approval under the National Capital Act.

Structural inspections completed in November 2025 confirmed that both structures are in an advanced state of deterioration and are no longer viable for safe use or repair. The silo exhibits extensive cracking, material degradation, and failed roof components, while the shed has experienced partial structural collapse and severe deterioration.

The purpose of the project is to eliminate immediate and long-term health and safety risks, remove non-operational and unsafe structures, reduce liability and maintenance requirements, and support the long-term stewardship and future agricultural use of the property.

The proposed work includes controlled demolition and complete removal of the silo and shed, including all above- and below-grade components, in accordance with applicable provincial regulations and NCC requirements. Demolition activities will be carried out using standard methods and equipment and sequenced to prevent damage to adjacent structures, including the farmhouse and barn. Vegetation immediately adjacent to the shed may be selectively removed where required to facilitate demolition, including one small tree and localized invasive shrubs. Where required, disturbed areas will be backfilled using clean material (including material generated on site) and graded to ensure safe and stable site conditions.

The demolition is anticipated to occur in fall 2026, outside the active nesting period for migratory birds.
