Site Improvements - Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area

Environment and Climate Change Canada – Canadian Wildlife Service (ECCC-CWS) is proposing to regrade and resurface two existing trails (approximately 1300 meters in total length), install new benches and relocate and add signage within the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area (PEPNWA), located in Prince Edward County, Ontario. ECCC-CWS will also be closing a 500 square meter parking area on site and rehabilitating the site in this area. Heavy machinery will be used to complete this work. These site improvements will provide a more accessible experience for site users at PEPNWA. Additionally, restoring the site to its natural state will benefit native wildlife including species at risk that use these areas.

National Wildlife Areas are created and managed for the purposes of wildlife conservation, research, and interpretation. PEPNWA is one of 10 National Wildlife Areas across the country that is open to the public to provide opportunities for people to experience and connect with nature.

The proposed work will be completed within ECCC's species at risk timing windows in November and December of 2024, and November and December 2025. Prior to any work commencing the areas will be searched by qualified individuals to remove any wildlife. Exposed soil and excavated material will be re-graded, stabilized and/or re-seeded using appropriate native plants, soils, seed mix and seed application at the completion of construction. Sediment and erosion control will be used where necessary.
