Upgrade Fire Pumphouse at Aircraft Hangar (Building B052 / Hangar 10), CFB Trenton

The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing a project. The Department of National Defence is undertaking a project (Project) to upgrade the existing fire suppression system of an existing aircraft hangar (Building B052 / Hangar 10) with the construction of a new pumphouse building with an underground water storage tank and supporting infrastructure situated in the central portion of 8 Wing Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, Ontario (44.113316°, -77.532478). The Project lies on the northern shores of Lake Ontario (Bay of Quinte), and approximately 3 km east of Trenton, Ontario. Within the Base, the Project work area or Project Site is located within the aerodrome at the Base, surrounded by regularly mowed areas and in close proximity to a taxiway, runways, service roads, and other airfield infrastructure. This Project will involve the construction of a new pumphouse building measuring 21 m long and 11 m wide with an approximate area of 231 m2, and an underground reinforced concrete water storage tank below the building, measuring 21 m wide, and 2.5 m deep covering an approximate area of 567 m2. An underground fire water line will be installed between the new pumphouse and Hangar 10. Ancillary systems such as diesel generators and pumps will be installed within the new pumphouse building, and communication lines, electrical lines, sanitary line, and other utilities will be installed in trenches and backfilled. Excess soil generated during excavation activities, and waste generated through the Project lifecycle will be hauled to an approved facility off-Base. Disturbed areas will be restored at the end of the Project.

Below is a summary of Project phases as they relate to this EED.

  1. Site Preparation
    1. Planning: Discussion with stakeholders, geotechnical and environmental investigations, and tendering the Project.
    2. Site Clearing: Completion of pre-disturbance ground surveys, vegetation clearing, sub-surface utility investigations, dig permits, and establishing Project's equipment, material, and supplies storage area, and vehicle parking areas.
  2. Construction
    1. Excavation for new pumphouse foundation.
    2. Trench work for new fire line and communication line between new pumphouse and Hangar 10.
    3. Trench work for new water line and sanitary line from new pumphouse.
    4. Installation of new pumphouse building envelope and interior works.
    5. Commissioning of diesel generators at the new pumphouse.
    6. Installation of new communication line between the new pumphouse building, Building B667 and Building B526.
  3. Restoration
    1. Site cleanup: Removal of temporary fencing, erosion and sediment controls, and waste removal.
    2. Site restoration: Grading, landscaping, pavement repair, and seeding or laying of Sod.
