Port of Oshawa Maintenance Dredging

HOPA is proposing to conduct regular maintenance dredging at the Port of Oshawa.  Sediment accumulates in the shipping channel due to littoral drift along the shore of Lake Ontario, as well as Oshawa Creek and Montgomery Creek that empty into the harbour.  Maintenance dredging is required to maintain the navigational channel design depths and reduce risk to marine navigation.  Sediment suitable for in-water placement will be relocated to a near-shore area east of the port to support the beneficial re-use of sand for shoreline management.  Sediment unsuitable for in-water placement will be disposed of upland.  Dredging is expected to occur on an as-needed basis depending on the accumulation within the shipping channel.  HOPA will implement all mitigation measures identified in the Letter of Advice from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

April 23, 2024 – The Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority issued its Notice of Determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
