Riprap protection at Pointe Platon

The Canadian Coast Guard wishes to install a vegetated riprap protection structure at Pointe Platon to protect its navigational aid structure from erosion. The protective structure will be approximately 100 metres long, and will raise the access road by about 1.8 metres to protect the only land access to the structure. Since the initial installation of the aid at Pointe Platon, the shoreline has eroded by about ten metres, making the access road impassable for ministry vehicles.

The Pointe Platon navigational aid structure is essential to maritime safety, as it is a reference mark in the Portneuf curve. The protective structure will ensure safe access to the structure at all times for maintenance work.

The Canadian Coast Guard wishes to take advantage of the period of work on the protective structure to proceed with the replacement of the aid-to-navigation structure, which has reached the end of its useful life. The existing 3' x 3' x 25' high structure will be replaced by a new 4' x 4' x 25' high clerestory steel tower with the same signage. The steel structure will rest on a reinforced concrete foundation.
