Peters Island Flood and Erosion Mitigation

Peters First Nation is proposing to enhance existing flood control infrastructure in the Fraser River along the north bank of Peters I.R. 2 (Peters Island). Proposed works include the construction of 10 riprap spurs along the north bank of Peters Island and upgrades to an existing water control structure. The purpose of the proposed project is to mitigate flood risk to the Peters First Nation community and prevent river avulsions on Peters Island.

Fish habitat offsetting measures are proposed and include the excavation of a series of ponds and channels within Peters Island, to create a groundwater fed off-channel that provides rearing habitat for salmonids. The plan includes the removal of invasive reed canary grass and revegetation with native species suitable for the site. In addition, a nook will be excavated in the secondary channel downstream of the existing flow control structure to increase flow and improve water quality in the side channel between Peters I.R.1 (mainland) and Peters I.R.2 (Peters Island).
