Maintenance dredging - Metro Vancouver Langley Outfall

The proposed project

The proposed project consists of maintenance dredging to remove accumulated sediment from the Langley wastewater treatment plant effluent outfall pipe. Periodic maintenance dredging is required to remove accumulated sediment from areas on either side of and around the terminus of the outfall pipe.

Proposed works:

  • Mobilization of a clamshell dredge, a marine spud derrick and material barges to the site
  • Dredge no more than 4000 cubic metres per year in an area of roughly 1800 square metres
  • Determine the outfall location by GPS and divers. Divers would mark the pipe alignment with Scotchman buoys to serve as a visual reference for the clamshell dredge
  • Extract sediment parallel to the pipe to create a trench approximately 2 to 3 metres wide along either side of the outfall pipe and approximately 4 metres wide at the outfall terminus
  • Divers will use a high-volume low-pressure jet pump to push accumulated sediment from the top of the outfall into the trenches. The clamshell bucket will excavate the filled trenches.
  • Load the material barge and tow via tugboat down the Fraser River to the Point Grey Disposal at Sea site for disposal in accordance with a valid Disposal at Sea Permit pursuant to the provisions of Part 7, Division 3 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999
  • The empty barge(s) will then be transported back to the project location and loaded again the next day, if required

The proposed works are expected to occur no more than three days per dredge event. Ongoing maintenance dredging is anticipated to be conducted, as needed.
