East Point Wildfire Risk Reduction

East Point is a Gulf Islands National Park Reserve property situated on the eastern-most portion of Saturna Island, BC. This popular visitor destination is known for marine life viewing and for the East Point Lighthouse, a Canadian Heritage Place. Fire hazard is often high to extreme at East Point, and there is concern that a wildfire could spread and threaten the important historic values on site. This project proposes to remove and thin out woody vegetation in the forested area around East Point with the use of power tools such as chainsaws. Adhering to FireSmart principles will protect and preserve the valuable Heritage buildings. Parks Canada will complete a basic impact assessment to assess the potential impacts of this work on natural resources and cultural heritage. The impact assessment will incorporate standard and site-specific measures to avoid and minimize potential impacts to natural resources and cultural heritage.
