Deroche Creek Realignment and Sediment Removal

The British Columbia Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy proposes to address sediment accumulation and erosion concerns in the lower kilometer of Deroche Creek upstream of Nicomen Slough to mitigate the risk of flooding and damage to infrastructure in the adjacent Leq'a:mel First Nation and Deroche communities. Proposed works include removal of riparian vegetation, construction of a sediment basin and low flow channel, installation of bed armouring at Taylor Road bridge, and construction of two timber deflectors on the Deroche Creek alluvial fan.

Fish habitat offsetting measures are proposed, including construction of four rearing habitat channels within the northeast and southeast portions of the Deroche Creek alluvial fan, installation of a large woody debris reef along the Highway 7 embankment, installation of habitat complexing features in the sediment basin low flow channel, and enhancement of existing riparian habitat along Deroche Creek through invasive species removal and planting of native trees and shrubs.

Emergency sediment removal was conducted in November 2022 to remove sediments introduced by the 2021 Atmospheric River Event. The objective of the proposed project is to provide a long-term solution to the ongoing sedimentation in lower Deroche Creek to mitigate future impacts on infrastructure and salmon habitat. The proposed project is expected to be completed throughout 2024, with instream works scheduled for August 1 – September 15.
