Boardwalk Replacement Project - Vaseux Bighorn National Wildlife Area

The Canadian Wildlife Service is proposing to undertake the decommissioning and replacement of an existing boardwalk within the Vaseux-Bighorn National Wildlife Area. The Vaseux-Bighorn National Wildlife Area is one of 10 national wildlife areas identified under the Connecting Canadians to Nature initiative that supports connecting Canadians to the natural world.

The scope of the project includes removing the existing 292 m2 boardwalk and replacing it with a new boardwalk within the existing orientation and route. The proposed scope of work includes, removal of the existing boardwalk, Helical pile foundations and heavy timber boardwalk construction.

The proposed work will be completed during the late fall/winter and during a period when disturbance to migratory birds and other wildlife will be minimal. The works will be kept to the existing footprint and matting will be placed under equipment to minimize ground disturbance. All noticeable construction impacts (e.g. ruts, holes, depressions, compacted areas) will be appropriately re-graded, backfilled with topsoil, re-contoured and capped in preparation for restoration. Exposed soil will be stabilized and/or re-seeded using appropriate native plants, soils, seed mix and seed application at the completion of construction.
