Sidney Island Wildfire Risk Reduction

A wildfire risk reduction project is proposed for select zones on Sidney Island within Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. Parks Canada will work with Indigenous knowledge holders to develop and implement a multi-year, culturally appropriate program to reduce fuel availability and tree density in these zones, supporting Indigenous stewardship and contributing to forest recovery. Work will involve trimming (pruning select branches to a height of two metres) and felling of select trees, and equipment will include chainsaws and all-terrain vehicles.
Parks Canada will complete a basic impact assessment to assess potential impacts of this work to natural resources and cultural heritage. The impact assessment will incorporate standard and site-specific measures to avoid and minimize potential impacts to natural resources and cultural heritage.
