Sackum Creek Overhead Bridge Replacement

The British Columbia (BC) Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is proposing the replacement of the Sackum Overhead Bridge structure (the Project) located on Trans-Canada Highway No.1, between Spences Bridge, BC and Lytton, BC. The Sackum Overhead Bridge, which spans Sackum Creek and the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway, was built in the 1950s and is reaching the end of its service life, therefore the bridge requires replacement to maintain Trans-Canada Highway No. 1 transportation connectivity. Part of the Project will intersect Sackum Indian Reserve (IR) No. 3 and Gulada IR No. 3A.

The Project will entail construction of a new bridge and approaches in a new alignment, road enhancement work to improve access to an adjacent cemetery, removal of a passing lane north of the bridge and decommissioning of a pullout south of the bridge, and demolition of the old bridge structure. Project activities that are expected to occur on IR lands include vegetation and tree clearing, regrading for construction access, demolition of the existing bridge structure, installation of temporary hydro poles, and reclamation. The project activities on IR land are subject to a s.82 determination under the Impact Assessment Act.

The proponent has applied to Environment and Climate Change Canada for a Species at Risk Act permit under section 73(3).
