Runway End Safety Area - Kelowna International Airport

The purpose of the project is to create a runway end safety area (RESA) at the Kelowna International Airport (YLW).  A RESA is designed to reduce the severity of damage to an airplane undershooting or overrunning the runway.  The proposed project includes the construction of a RESA at each of Runways 16 and 34 to comply with impending Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).  The proposed amendments to the CARs will require Canadian-certified aerodromes to extend the current safety area from the existing mandated 60 m to a minimum of 150 m at the ends of the runways that serve scheduled commercial passenger-carrying flights.  Total construction area is approximately 42,000 m².

Latest update

March 22, 2022 – Transport Canada issued its Notice of Determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
