Vancouver International Airport (YVR) Lot S30 Remediation Project

Transport Canada is proposing to conduct soil remediation on Lot S30 at the Vancouver International Airport in Richmond, BC. The Vancouver Airport Authority may need to issue a permit to enable the remedial works on the land under their administration. The Lot S30 site is a 3.8 ha area that is currently used for truck parking and as an aircraft apron near the South Terminal of Vancouver International Airport, north of Inglis Drive and west of Cowley Crescent. Inglis Drive is adjacent to the Fraser River. The site was a Boeing aircraft maintenance building in the 1940s. The facility included paint shops and machine shops. Solvents, oil and fuels were stored in the shops and/or in above ground storage tanks outside of the shops. The sources of contamination were likely spills at the shops and storage tanks.

The proposed project consists of excavating and disposing of approximately 3,400 tonnes to 4,900 tonnes of hydrocarbon and metals contaminated material at an offsite, permitted landfill. The excavation will be backfilled with clean fill and resurfaced with asphalt or concrete for vehicle and aircraft traffic. No other structures will be constructed as part of this project. The contamination is predominately in the near surface soils.

The project is scheduled to proceed in the fall of 2024.
