STZ'UMINUS FIRST NATION COASTAL EROSION MITIGATION

The Stz'uminus First Nation (SFN) is proposing the Coastal Erosion Mitigation Project (Project), which involves the design and implementation of a beach nourishment and headland system. This initiative is intended for two shoreline areas situated within Kulleet Bay, on their Chemainus 13 reserve, referred to as the Village Shoreline and the Cemetery Shoreline. The objective of the Project is to provide protection from erosion, and is not a flood protection project. The project aims to implement an environmentally sustainable shoreline management strategy of beach nourishment and headlands, referred to as a 'soft shore' or ‘naturebased' approach. The primary objective is to preserve and restore the natural functions of a healthy shoreline. This entails creating a shoreline that is not only more resilient against erosion but also maintains ecological benefits. The proposed foreshore protection design is to implement a beach nourishment and headland system, which focuses on minimizing environmental impact while safeguarding the shoreline's integrity.
