Cape Beale Light Station - Roof Replacements

Cape Beale Light station is one of three light house stations operated by the Canadian Coast Guard in the West Coast Trail unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The metal roofs of two buildings at the Cape Beale light station need replacement. The buildings are used as residences and accommodation for the light station keepers and other Canadian Coast Guard personal and partners and are essential to maintain the operation of the station. The objective of this work is to maintain and extend the life of the buildings.
Bats have been observed entering and exiting from the roofs of similar structures at another light station along the West Coast Trail (Carmanah). Although there are no reports of bats entering and existing the roofs at Cape Beale Light Station, the light keeper has observed bats in the spring and summer. Furthermore, monitoring programs have detected 8 species of bats including the Federally SARA listed Little Brown Myotis (endangered) and the COSEWIC assessed (endangered) Silver Haired and Hoary Bats at nearby Kicha Lake and Cheewaht Estuary monitoring sites. Potential adverse effects of the project on bats will be assessed through Parks Canada Basic Impact Assessment.
