North Bay Small Craft Harbour Rehabilitation

Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours (DFO-SCH) is planning to undertake harbour improvements at the North Bay, Ontario Small Craft Harbour site. DFO-SCH is responsible for maintaining a safe and accessible harbour at North Bay, ON. The harbour is used primarily as a recreational facility, offering public lake access and temporary transient berthage.

This rehabilitation project will focus on the Service Dock and Launch Ramp and includes:

  • Encapsulating the existing steel sheet pile walls on the Service Dock and Launch Ramp Walls with new pre-cast concrete panels
  • New walls to be approximately 500-700mm beyond existing walls
  • Supply and installation of rock protection (rip rap) along the toe of the new wall (full length)
  • Requires approximately 1.2 m wide x 0.6 m deep excavation 
  • To accommodate the new wall, the existing launch ramp consisting of pre-cast concrete panels, will be removed and reinstalled about 500-700mm north of its existing location
  • Installing a pile cap on the new walls
  • Installing a new concrete deck and/or reinstating existing concrete pavers (where applicable)
  • Reinstating asphalt in the disturbed area

The project will include installation and maintenance of a turbidity curtain around the work. Additionally, there are two gas pumps on the service dock that will remain; fuel lines will be located and protected during construction.

July 8, 2025 – Fisheries and Oceans Canada Small Craft Harbours has issued it's Notice of Determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
