Esk'etemc-Alkali Lake IR1 Wastewater Upgrades project

Project description:
Esk'etemc community members living in Alkali Lake IR#1 have been experiencing failed wastewater ground discharge systems
that continue to pose health and safety risks to the community members and their families. Thus, a feasibility study was
undertaken to determine the most effective means of collecting, treating and disposing of sanitary wastewater from the
community. The study concluded that, due to the urgency of the need for septic repairs, a comprehensive assessment of each
existing system in the community be completed to start the repair/replacement process. This will take place within Alkali Lake
IR which is located near a small creek, and grassland terrestrial habitat. Repair will require unearthing of the existing septic
tanks and potential replacement as well as soil pit tests and peculation tests.

Water Bodies / Navigable Waters:
No works will occur within Alkali creek, the nearest septic field due for maintenance is approximately 30 meters away based on
Google Earth estimates.

Vegetation:
No Vegetation species at risk are expected to be impacted by the proposed works associated with this project.

Birds:
Consultant has provided list of species of concern and suggested mitigation measures.

Terrestrial Wildlife:
The project site is located within Critical Habitat for the American Badger (Taxidea taxus jeffersonii).

Fish / Aquatic Wildlife:
No Fish/Aquatic life is expected to be impacted by the proposed works associated with this project. Works will occur outside of
any water body.

Other:
11 Contaminated sites exist within Alkali Lake IR1 works on this project are not anticipated to disturb the contaminated sites as all works will occur on pre-disturbed sites (existing septic fields).
In addition, an archaeological site exists approximately 500 meters from the nearest existing septic field, works are not expected to affect this site due to the distance between the project site and the archaeological site and again, that works will only occur on pre-disturbed areas.

Mitigation measures to be implemented as described in the review.
