Simpcw: Chinook Cove Water System Upgrades and Extension

The Chinook Cove and Louise Jules water systems in the Simpcw First Nation North Thompson IR1 are to be upgraded to address water quality concerns resulting from elevated concentration
of minerals such as iron and manganese, insufficient storage and aging infrastructure. The proposed upgrades are proposed to be implemented in phases and will include:
1. A watermain extension connecting the Louise Jules homes to the Chinook Cove system to provide improved water quality for the community as well as to provide system looping of the existing watermain for increased resiliency and increased fire protection. These improvements are proposed as phase 1 of the works.
2. A water treatment plant to address the elevated levels of hardness, iron, manganese and ammonia in the water. This improvement is proposed as phase 2 and will be submitted in a separate PAR application.
3. A reservoir expansion to provide adequate fire flow to the current and future members. This improvement is proposed as phase 2 and will be submitted in a separate PAR application.
4. Well pump upgrades in the Chinook Cove system. This  improvement is proposed as phase 2 and will be submitted in a separate PAR application.

Vegetation clearing should occur outside of the bird nesting window. If this is not possible, a Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) will complete a bird nest survey prior to vegetation clearing activities.
A QEP will assess all trees that need to be removed to ensure there are no stick nests present.
The area to be cleared or distrubed of vegetation will be minimized and kept to within the project area only. Clear flagging of the areas to be cleared/disturbed will be undertaken prior such activities
commencing.
As recomended in the Environmental Overview, a Construction Environmental Management Plan should be developed for the
project prior to commencement.

There are known occurrences of American Badger throughout the North Thompson valley between Kamloops and Clearwater.
However, there were no badger dens observed during the site visit.

The potential adverse environmental effects may include the following:
- Loss of vegetation;
- Loss of wildlife habitat;
- Erosion and sedimentation into local streams and drainages;

is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
