YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth Cabin Improvement Project

Twenty-three cabins at Camp Queen Elizabeth on Beausoleil Island have Little Brown Myotis (Myotis lucifugus) accessing the living quarters of cabins while campers are present. Occupancy has been confirmed through the presence of bat guano, bat bugs, and visually seeing them roosted inside the supporting structures of the cabins. The cabins are assumed to be used as maternity roosts as individuals have been observed emerging from the identified cabins through the season which is consistent with maternity roosting periods. The occupancy of Myotis lucifugus has been confirmed through passive acoustic monitoring.

A designated contractor will identify and seal off external bat-sized entry points on the siding, eaves and external structures of the identified cabins. Entry points will be resealed with spray foam, mesh, siding and flashing may be replaced, as required. The Camp will install and maintain 4-chambered bat houses in consultation with Parks Canada biologists near affected cabins in an effort to provide excluded bats with alternative roosting locations.
