Conservation work on the inner left side of the Kent Gate, Quebec

In order to conserve the Bastion des Ursulines cultural resource, which is part of the Fortifications of Québec National Historic Site, masonry work on the inner left side of the Kent Gate must be undertaken. The work involves the complete dismantling of the stone facing on Dauphine Street; from the Kent Gate to the intersection of Auteuil Street. In addition to the complete dismantling of the facing, approximately 600 mm of the core will be removed and replaced with a new masonry matrix. During the reassembly of the facing, the stones showing advanced signs of degradation (e.g. cracking or important delamination) will be replaced by stones of equivalent nature and dimensions. The balance of the stones will be put back in place respecting their original location while eliminating the bulge in the upper part of the wall caused by the lateral pressure of the soil. During the reassembly, modern engineering measures such as the installation of reinforcing rods and the installation of a waterproofing system at the back of the wall will be put in place to ensure the durability of the structure over time. In order for the work to be done safely, soils will have to be excavated behind the wall to reduce the loads on the structure. The soils will be stored on site for reuse during the backfill; in the case of a surplus quantity at the end of the work, these will be managed according to the regulations in force. A temporary ramp of clean granular material will be constructed at the beginning of the work to allow for the excavation work to be carried out. Finally, the land will be restored to its original shape at the end of the work. The work will be carried out in accordance with cultural resource management guidelines. It will be monitored by cultural resources, environmental and engineering experts. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
