UXO Characterization in Sector 1A - Garrison Valcartier

The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing a project. The activity consists of conducting a characterization of the presence of unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO) in Sector 1A of the Valcartier Base. This step will make it possible to locate UXO present in the soil in order to plan their safe removal. The characterization will also serve to identify areas that need to be cleared to facilitate access and ensure optimal UXO removal, thereby reducing risk. One area has already been cleared and secured with a fence to prohibit access. Although this portion was previously covered by an Environmental Effects Determination (EED), it will be included in the current assessment to account for the overall impact of the project.

Latest update

January 13, 2026 – The public comment period on the project is closed. The Department of National Defence is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
