Hay Cutting at Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence National Historic Sites, Nova Scotia 2024

The following project is focused on the cutting of hay fields at Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence National Historic Site (NHS) located in Nova Scotia. Approximately 32.8 acres (17.7 acres on the northern section and 15.1 acres on the southern section) will be cut within the NHS. Hay cutting will be performed via heavy machinery (tractor). It has been identified that the hay removal poses an impact to cultural resources through tire rutting. Therefore, it has been determined that cutting will only take place when the fields are dry and the soil is solid. Additionally, hay cutting also poses a threat to ground nesting birds. To avoid this potential impact to these species, hay cutting will only take place well outside the nesting season. Finally, understanding that the machinery being used to cut the hay is located outside the NHS, removal of any soil, seeds, and vegetation via a pressure washer will be required prior to entering the site to avoid introduction of invasive plant species.
