Port of Saint John Cruise Terminal Caisson Repair Project

The cruise ship industry is a vital component of Port Saint John's operations. Cruise vessels are received at three terminals: the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal and the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal—both located on the east side of the harbour at Pugsley Wharf—and Long Wharf, situated to the north. A diving inspection conducted in mid‑December 2025 confirmed measurable undermining and erosion at these sites, affecting seven of the twelve caissons at the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal and two of the seven caissons at the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal. The deterioration presents both operational and safety risks, with potential implications for cruise ship scheduling, passenger safety. The project will address these issues by replacing the missing foundation soils with ready mix concrete. Temporary formwork will be installed, followed by the placement of ready‑mix concrete pumped into the void space beneath the caisson to restore stability.
