Halifax Stanfield Airfield Improvements

Halifax International Airport Authority is proposing to undertake a number of improvements to critical infrastructure, including the restoration of various airfield surfaces which have reached the end of their maintainable lifespan, terrain improvements, and the construction of a new taxiway to facilitate safe and efficient movement of aircraft.

The project is expected to be completed in three phases:

Phase I – Airfield Surface Rehabilitation

The pavement restoration activities will replace the top layers of pavement in several areas around the airfield.  The combined pavement surface area of the airfield surfaces identified for restoration is approximately 87,000 m2

Phase II – Terrain Improvements adjacent to Runway 14-32

Three areas of terrain near Runway 14-32 require modification to adjust grading and elevations.  The adjustment of the terrain will include removal and off-site disposal of approximately 22,500 m3 of pyritic slate bedrock, which underlies much of the airport property.  Off-site disposal will occur at an approved facility, following analytical testing of the material to confirm the absence of contaminants.  The areas will be reinstated with low-permeability soils and landscape groundcover.

Phase III – Taxiway Construction

HIAA proposes to construct a new taxiway between the end of Runway 14 and the terminal apron.  The taxiway will consist of a 44 m wide paved asphalt surface, comprised of a 23 m taxiway width for aircraft movements, and 10.5 m wide shoulders on either side to facilitate snow-clearing and prevent surface erosion and foreign object debris from jet-blast and prop-wash. The approximate area of the new taxiway is 21,500 m2.
