Bedford Institute of Oceanography District Heating Line Replacement

This project is to replace a defined section of heating water pipeline at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO). The BIO campus is comprised of several adjoining buildings and some stand-alone buildings. With respect to building heating services, there is a district heating water system which distributes heating water for the majority of the campus. Most buildings requiring heating water are interconnected and water lines run through the various buildings. The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) building is located on the BIO campus but is separate from the main buildings and central boiler plant. As such, the heating water line for the CCG building runs underground via a 6" pre-insulated pipe. This section of heating line has recently experienced several leaks. It has been determined that there is localized corrosion under the insulation, occurring at the pipe joints.

Considering that the likelihood of leak recurrence is high, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) requires replacement of this section of heating water pipe. The project entails the replacement of the district heating water line that runs from the VanSteenburg boiler room to the CCG Building. This amounts to approximately 250m of 6" pre-insulated pipe, including heating water supply and return lines.  It is expected to be a replacement-in-kind with the added feature of leak detection capability. Full installation details include trenching, pipe and leak detection installation, backfill and asphalt.
