Halifax Gate – Removal of Fuel Tanks and Asbestos Disposal Cell

The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing a project. Valero Energy Corp will be conducting removal of remaining infrastructure on Department of National Defence property near 1350 Main Road, Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia. Removals include a harbourside tank farm, associated piping, and a closed asbestos disposal cell. The tank farm consists of four large fuel tanks, piping, and miscellaneous small support structures. The Asbestos Disposal Cell is approx. 80m by 55m, and contains roughly 6,000m3 of material. Work is expected to begin June 2026 and conclude Fall 2026.


Latest update

April 15, 2026 - The Department of National Defence intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, the Department of National Defence is inviting public comments until May 4, 2026 respecting that determination.
