Machias Seal Island Lightstation Infrastructure Maintenance

The proposed project involves various minor capital maintenance and upgrade work on existing buildings and infrastructure at Machias Seal Island Lightstation (Directory of Federal Real Property [DFRP] #03984), Charlotte County, New Brunswick.  The property is owned by Public Works and Government Services Canada. The custodian is Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Coast Guard).   All proposed maintenance and upgrades will be to improve or maintain existing buildings and infrastructure in place on already developed land.

The project will be completed in multiple phases over the next 3 years and will include activities such as the following:

  • Upgrades to the existing Solar panel array
  • Upgrade of existing Battery power storage to a lithium-based battery system
  • Maintenance and minor upgrades of existing septic systems for both dwellings
  • Other general building and infrastructure maintenance and upkeep tasks ( envelope maintenance, window replacements, interior improvements, etc.)

Major capitol upgrades or large infrastructure additions at the site or any work that could disturb undeveloped  areas of the island will utilize a separate notification process.

As the island is a migratory bird sanctuary, all work will take place outside the migration/nesting restricted periods, no heavy machinery will be used, and the work will take place on already developed ground in order to minimize risk of any negative impacts on bird habitat.
