Machias Seal Island Lightstation Septic Systems Upgrade, Charlotte County, New Brunswick

The proposed  project involves upgrading the waste water management systems of the two lightkeeper dwellings at Machias Seal Island.  These proposed upgrades to the septic systems will treat the wastewater from the dwellings before it passes into the existing septic tanks and fields.  By adding the new systems as proposed and keeping existing septic tanks and fields we will be able to improve the function of the wastewater systems while minimizing any disturbance to migratory bird habitat

The project will be completed in a single phase and will include the following:

  • the construction of two small outbuildings (10' x12') adjacent to existing dwellings to house the new systems. These will be constructed on grade with pre-formed concrete block foundations that will require minimal soil excavation ( hand tools only)
  • Installation of  new polyethylene septic filtering systems that will utilize low maintenance coconut fibre based filter media to complement the existing wastewater systems.
  • Connection of the new filtering systems to the existing wastewater systems, reusing the existing septic tanks, disposal fields, and most of the existing piping.

As the island is a migratory bird sanctuary, all work will take place outside the migration/nesting restricted periods, no heavy machinery will be used and the work will take place on already developed ground in order to minimize risk of any negative impacts on bird habitat
