Thunderchild Community Walking Trail

Thunderchild First Nation is proposing a project that includes the construction of a 4.75km (1.8m wide) paved multi-use trail through the Thunderchild community connecting key landmarks including; Thunderchild Band Office, Chief Andrew Paddy Memorial Pow Wow Grounds, Thunderchild Wellness Centre, and the Piyesiw Awasis School.

Along the length of the proposed trail alignment will be signage and wayfinding infrastructure, solar lighting, benches, pedestrian timber bridge crossing of small creek and rest/gathering nodes to support and encourage the active use of the connecting trail for all community members.  Portion of the multi-use pathway will cross over an existing low land which in Spring melt off and rain events forms a stream. The construction pathway through low lying areas will be done in a manner that will maintain all current natural flows of water (oversized culverts and/or localized trail bridge section).

The proposed walking pathway and trail system aims to enhance community connectivity, safety, and well-being by providing a dedicated, accessible route for residents to travel between key community facilities. Currently, there is no existing infrastructure that enables safe pedestrian travel to these important destinations.

By integrating solar lighting and designated rest stops along the route, the pathway will promote year-round safety, accessibility, encourage active transportation, and support healthier lifestyles. The project will foster social interaction, increase participation in community activities, and contribute to overall community well-being. Additionally, the environmentally friendly design aligns with sustainability goals while improving quality of life for all residents.
