Traverse Bay Shoreline Stabilization - Site A (North Shoreline)

The project involves stabilizing and protecting approximately 840 meters of the Lake Winnipeg shoreline within Traverse Bay and the Sagkeeng First Nation.  Slope stabilization and erosion protection are required to arrest severe shoreline erosion and slope failure that are approaching three residences and the community's North Shore Road.

Key elements of the design include excavating a keyway for scour protection at the base of the eroded bank (isolated from the water's edge by a beach), regrading the eroded bank to a 2h:1v slope, installing non-woven geotextile along the bank and keyway, placing a 0.45 m thick bedding layer of 200 mm down granular material, placing 300 to 1200 mm diameter riprap (blast rock) above the bedding material to a final grade of 2.5h:1v, and site restoration works.  Access will be from North Shore Road, and the top of the bank will be cleared to the extent required for equipment to work from the top of the bank.  No in-water work will be conducted.  Some material will be stockpiled on site at nearby locations.

The construction is to take place between January 21 and July 31 2026, with completion of the bank stabilization and erosion protection works (all work below the extreme high water mark) by April 7 2026.  It will result in a permanent change (stabilization) of the shoreline above the normal water level.

A Request for Review has been submitted to Fisheries and Oceans Canada to determine whether the project will need authorization under the Fisheries Act.
