Bear and Moss Trails Restoration, Elk Island National Park

In the summer of 2021, trail work was carried out on Moss and Bear trails in Elk Island National Park, that did not specifically follow national trail PRIA procedures. Due to extreme flooding on both trails, deep and long trenches were constructed perpendicular to the trails to provide drainage. The appearance of the trails resulted in some fairly negative feedback from a couple of visitors, with the result being recognition by the park, that a restoration plan was required to restore the environment in the immediate area of both trails.
During the restoration work, heavy equipment will be required to refill the trenches with native soils, and to level the areas. Native seed mixtures suitable to the ecosite will be used to restore growth of native vegetation.
