Meanook National Wildlife Area Buildings Demolition

The Canadian Wildlife Service is proposing to undertake the demolition of nine buildings located in the Meanook National Wildlife Area.

Seven of the nine buildings contain asbestos in the building materials, which will require abatement. The buildings range in footprint from 18 m2 to 142 m2 and were constructed circa 1948-1962. The heritage value of the buildings has been assessed and none have been designated. A contract is being tendered for the demolition of six buildings over three years, in 2020, 2021, and 2022 respectively. Demolition of the remaining three buildings, and thus project completion, is anticipated by 2026. Demolition and abatement of harmful substances (e.g. lead paint, asbestos) will be completed by qualified contractors. Consideration for the introduction of invasive weeds will be incorporated into the contract (e.g. cleaning equipment, clean sources of soil for infilling), and monitoring and spot-treatment of weeds at former building sites will be incorporated into management planning for the site. Demolition will take place outside of the breeding bird season for migratory birds and the maternity roosting period for bats. If bats do use the buildings as maternity roosts, bat houses are available on-site as alternative roosts. All debris and waste will be removed from the project site. Disturbed areas will be restored to a predetermined condition (backfilled, graded, and a layer of topsoil to allow for vegetation growth) and all necessary measures to address potential erosion will be employed.
