Keeseekoose Education Center Drainage

Keeseekoose First Nation is planning to install two drainage features around the community's Education Center to manage surface runoff. The existing natural drainage path, which runs from the culverts under the highway east of the school to the creek a quarter section west of the school, was disrupted when the Education Center was built. Surface runoff now ponds around the school and is unable to reach the channel that leads to the creek, resulting in flooding of the school basement rather than draining to the creek. The project will reestablish a drainage swale around the school so that runoff from the culverts is directed to a continuous downhill channel around the school and back into the natural channel and the creek. The swales will be created using heavy equipment and seeded with grass.  Rock rip rap may be added at the culvert outlets to protect against high flows. A second swale will be created alongside the school to manage runoff from snowfall and rain.

Latest update

April 1, 2026 – Indigenous Services Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting public comments until May 1, 2026 respecting that determination.
