Jackfish Creek Bison Pasture Expansion

The proposed project is an expansion of approximately 70 hectares to the existing bison pasture within the Lake Audy South Bison Enclosure. The objective of this project is to restore and expand the rough fescue grasslands in this area, enhancing the ecological integrity of grasslands in Riding Mountain National Park. Expansion of the existing bison enclosure will be a cost-effective means of improving grassland indicators in Riding Mountain National Park, facilitating the endurance of conservation gains achieved by other projects like prescribed fires. The scope of project involves the construction of a new fence (~2.75 km) and the decommission of the existing 1 km stretch of fence along the south pasture at the bison enclosure. Project activities will occur over various phases and include: 1. Removal of some trees and vegetation. 2. Installation of fence posts and page wire. 3. Installation of a new cattle guard/gate. 4. Construction of a wooden A-frame-style fence around the horse corral area to separate the pasture from the corral area. 5. Decommissioning the old south-boundary fence and filling in the holes with topsoil to mitigate impacts to wildlife.
