Chipewyan Prairie First Nation Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

This project includes the construction of a new facultative (conventional) sewage lagoon, new sewage pumping station and new sewage force main for the community.  The purpose of this project is to replace the existing sewage treatment and collection / pumping infrastructure as the existing infrastructure is undersized, does not meet operational standards, and is located adjacent to the community, within the recommended minimum setback distance which poses a health and safety risk.

The new lagoon upgrades will include construction of four (4) new HDPE-lined lagoon cells: two (2) new 2,000 cubic metre anaerobic cells, one (1) new 19,035 cubic metre primary (treatment) cell, and one (1) new 92,785 cubic metre storage cell.  Overall the projected lifespan of the new lagoon is a minimum of 20 years.  The existing lagoon and related infrastructure will be decommissioned as part of the project, including removal of existing wastewater, leveling and backfilling and site decommissioning to Alberta standards.

The project will also include construction of a new primary sewage pumping station complete with wet / dry style substructure and a timber framed building for housing of all controls and a backup power generator.  New building size is approximately 67 square metres.  The projected life span of the new pumping station is a minimum of 20 years.  The sewage pumping station will be constructed adjacent to the existing primary, submersible wet well style station for the community.  The existing station will be decommissioned including removal of all mechanical and electrical equipment, demolishing the existing barrel to below grade, backfill and site grading.  The new sewage force main from the pumping station to the lagoon will be approximately 3,200 metres of 150 mm diameter HDPE piping.  A new 1,100 metre long access road is also required to access the new lagoon site from the existing roadways.

March 29, 2021 – Indigenous Services Canada issued its notice of determination https://iaac-aeic.gc.ca/050/evaluations/proj/81132 and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
