Minnewanka Landfill Surface Water Mitigations

The project aims to provide a solution to mitigate the existing surface water pooling on the Minnewanka Landfill site and migration across Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive. The design includes construction of one swale and one ditch to redirect surface water away from the landfill site and into an existing natural watercourse that eventually flows into Cascade Creek. The swale is located on the upslope (northwest) side of the project site. It is 85 meters long with an average cut of approximately 0.8 meters and a slope ranging from 0.5% to 3.0%. The swale is intended to intercept the majority of the flows and divert them back into the historic drainage path before they reach the landfill. The ditch is located on the downslope (southeast) side of the project site, parallel to Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive. It is proposed to be 137 meters long, approximately 3.8 meters deep at its deepest point, with a constant grade of 0.5%. The ditch is intended to intercept any remaining runoff originating from the landfill area and divert it back into the historic drainage path before it reaches the road.
