Healy Brewster and Spray Wildfire Risk Reduction Project

Parks Canada plans to conduct Wildfire Risk Reduction activities in the area west of the Banff Townsite. The project area encompasses seven units totaling 495 hectares (Healy Brewster Unit - 370 ha; Spray Units - 125 hectares). A temporary bridge over Brewster Creek will be required for equipment access to the Healy Brewster Unit. The project's primary objective is to mechanically reduce the amount of fuel present, creating a contiguous fire break and reducing the risk of wildfire to the Banff Townsite. The fire break will serve as a containment line to support large scale wildfire suppression activities and break up fuel continuity in the area to reduce the threat of wildfire to the community of Banff, as well as improving fire resilience in the Bow and Spray Valleys. The project will additionally provide long term ecological integrity benefits through creation of a more open forest structure. The project is anticipated to start with access preparation for the Spray units in fall 2025 and will take approximately 5 years for timber harvesting and an additional 5 years for site monitoring and reclamation.
